MUSEE EL CASAL
In Palalda, the village opposite Amélie-les-Bains, on the other side of the bubbling Tech, the museum is located at the foot of the signal tower in front of the Saint-Martin church. The Musée de la Poste has disappeared and made way for "EL CASAL", which has been completely refurbished, offering visitors exhibition spaces dedicated to the visual arts, the discovery of the region and local heritage.
The museum is divided into three sections:
- The permanent exhibition on Mackintosh, a British architect, painter and watercolorist born in Glasgow, Scotland, and buried in Port Vendres! He was the leading exponent of the Glasgow School of Arts & Crafts, which influenced the Modern Style movement. Mackintosh and his wife (also an artist) lived part of their lives in Amélie-les-Bains. The museum features models and paintings by the artist.
- The historical heritage of Amélie-les-Bains-Palalda. This is a second permanent exhibition (created by the Pays d'Art et d'Histoire Transfrontalier), focusing on the village's historical heritage. Here, you'll find explanatory panels and a film reviewing the village's history. The "arts and popular traditions" museum area features a wealth of antique objects, lost trades and unusual items once used in the Catalan countryside.
- The second floor hosts occasional and temporary exhibitions.
Next door, the visit continues with craftsmen's workshops and a store dedicated to arts and crafts and local products.
