MARCEVOL PRIORY
A former 12th century priory, it offers accommodation and hosts classical music concerts and art exhibitions
A dozen kilometers east of Prades, the charming village of Arboussols has on its territory an old priory of the XIIth century, founded by the order of Saint-Sepulcre. The site, built on a rocky balcony that offers views of the Canigó among the most beautiful in the department, has kept intact its large church with three naves, but also and above all the beautiful facade, decorated with a sumptuous portal of pink marble from the quarry of Villefranche-de-Conflent; the two leaves of the door are richly decorated with hinges typical of the art of Catalan iron. Abandoned during the Revolution, it was later transformed into a farmhouse, and the real beginnings of its restoration only date from 1972. Since 2001, the Foundation of the Priory of Marcevol manages the site and continues its vocation of welcoming the public, accommodation for groups, school trips and cultural events. An agro-ecological project to reclaim the landscape of the site has even been launched: 6 hectares devoted to crops adapted to a dry environment. Classical music and contemporary art also seem to have found their place at Marcevol: high quality concerts and exhibitions or installations that are only matched by the beauty of the site. The village of Arboussols itself is also full of charm. It is reached by a delightful road on the side of the mountain, through the vineyards and small stone walls. The surroundings of the village are also an opportunity to go on beautiful hikes and to discover this often unknown wild region.
