Museum housing 36 statues (bronze and terracotta) as well as lithographs and various objects, illustrating the life of the artist

La Métairie is a museum that pays tribute to Aristide Maillol (1861-1944), a local child and famous sculptor. Managed by the Dina Vierny Foundation, this museum houses 36 statues - bronze and terracotta - as well as lithographs and various objects illustrating the life of the artist. You will also be able to watch a moving film dedicated to her, shot in Banyuls a few months before her death... In the beautiful garden, the statue of the Mediterranean stands serenely over his grave.

Recomanable museu que va ser la casa de l’artista. La instal.lació no és accessible per discapacitats i per a la nostra sorpresa no disposa de lavabos, espatllats de fa temps

Excellent small museum in Maillol's restored rural villa in a peaceful setting a few km outside Banyuls. Lots of background inc an evocative b&w art documentary made just a year before his death in 1944.
Small clay maquettes from early in career inform his later development and the challenge of representing the human form. Also a few larger figures plus paintings and lithographs. Very sensuous, pure work inc a beautifully serene bronze, Mediterranée, under which he's buried in the garden.
Definitely vaut le détour. Sensibly priced admission at 7 euros. Not busy in June - felt like a visite privée.
