IGLESIA OF OUR-LADY-OF-ANGELS
A single nave church with a semicircular apse dedicated to the Virgin Mary and featuring two Gothic side chapels.
Built in the 11th and 12th centuries, the church of Notre-Dame-des-Anges is dedicated to the Virgin Mary. It is a single nave building with a semi-circular apse. At the end of the Middle Ages, two side chapels of Gothic architecture were added. Like many buildings, it has undergone many changes over the centuries. It was during one of its many alterations that its masterpiece was extracted: the white marble tympanum, sculpted at the end of the 12th century by an anonymous artist, known as the "Master of Cabestany" (in the Middle Ages, few artists signed their works, but the work of each one is recognizable thanks to specificities, such as a signature, in the execution of the sculptures). This Catalan artist is known for his uncompromising works, which give off a wild impression, as can be seen in his three scenes of the Assumption of the Virgin. The Master of Cabestany left us works throughout the south of France, in the Aude at Rieux-Minervois, in the medieval Benedictine abbey of Lagrasse and in the cathedral abbey of Saint Papoul, but also in Spain at the Monastery of Sant Pere de Rodes in Alt Emporda and at the castle-museum of Peralada, and in the Tuscany region of Italy. In the department, in addition to the tympanum of the church of Notre-Dame-des-Anges, we also owe him the lintel of Saint Génis des Fontaines, the Romanesque portal of the church of Sainte-Marie du Boulou or the Monastir del Camp in Passa where he left his mark.
