A grandiose, vertiginous abbey of early Southern Romanesque art, at an altitude of 1098 metres and in the form of two churches

The Abbaye Saint-Martin du Canigou is an emblematic site in Catalonia. Accessible after a hike, the abbey reveals its beauty at every turn. Its arcaded bell tower, marble capitals, abbey church and vaulted crypt make it a jewel of the region's early Romanesque style. Restored in the 20th century, the abbey has been entrusted since 1988 to the Catholic Community of the Beatitudes, which welcomes you for services, masses and retreats. Guided tours of the abbey are also available. A nearby lookout point offers a breathtaking view of the surrounding countryside.

Un très beau site avec une histoire riche et intéressante. Possibilité de visite uniquement avec un tour guidé qui nous a permis d'apprécier pleinement ce monument. L’accueil était agréable également. Pensez à monter tout en haut de chemin pour avoir la vue sur ensemble de abbaye.

Originality
Si le site se mérite (50 minute de montée à pied), l'ascension se fait bien et le résultat vaut vraiment la peine. Le site est très beau et bien aménagé: il y a des tables de piquenique notamment et une boutique. La visite est faite par des laïcs en retraite. Si vous êtes montés en débardeur, on vous donnera de quoi vous couvrir les épaules.
Attention à bien choisir votre jour toutefois, la météo est parfois capricieuse et la brume souvent au rendez vous.

Merci d'avoir pris le temps de donner votre avis encourageant sur l'abbaye. Une petite précision : les visites sont guidées par des membres de la Communauté catholique des Béatitudes (à qui l'abbaye a été confiée par le diocèse de Perpignan) qui peuvent être des personnes consacrées ou laïques. En été, des bénévoles viennent les aider : des jeunes, mais pas seulement. Ces bénévoles partagent la vie de la Communauté pendant une partie de leurs vacances. N'hésitez pas à nous contacter si l'envie vous prend !

A high tourist site deserves a visit! You can walk (narrow and tarmacked road) in 50 minutes or jeep (paying). Do not forget to bring water (not drinking water but purchase bottles). The abbey is a beautiful architectural building but to continue the ascent still 5 minutes (difficult trail) in order to enjoy an exceptional view of the abbey. Allow one visiting time for the interior. Possibility photo and film inside. Please respect places! The descent is faster but more tiring... if you do not have fort training risks lumbar sorrows the next day.

On peut toujours acheter de l'eau ou d'autres boissons au magasin de l'abbaye, mais il y a maintenant aussi plusieurs robinets d'eau potable en libre accès.
