"La Douleur", created in 1922 by Aristide Maillol, is a light-gray sandstone sculpture emblematic of Céret's war memorial. Commissioned by the town to honor the memory of the soldiers who fell in the First World War, this work represents a seated Catalan woman, with a robust figure and generous forms, symbolizing pain and mourning. The artist produced several preparatory drawings for this sculpture. Highly expressive and poignant, these sketches are on display at the Musée d'Art Moderne in Céret.
