THE FONTFRÈDE PEAK
Go there and contact
The Fontfrère peak, an ideal place for picnics, is located in Céret.
Leaving the town to the south (pay attention to the signs), the road gradually rises and winds through typically Mediterranean vegetation composed of cork and holm oaks on schistose soil. After the Col de la Brousse at 861 m, head for the Col de Fontfrède, at 1,000 m. It takes about 20 minutes from Céret. Ideal for picnics (equipped area) or to cool down when the heat is on down below, the place also hosts a small stele known as "Les Evadés de France". It is indeed through this area that many of them, during the Second World War crossed the border, guided by "smugglers" to join the free forces. The Fontfrède peak, just above, is easily accessible in a short time and can be reached by crossing a magnificent beech forest. Culminating at 1 093 m of altitude, it offers one of the most beautiful panoramas, with 360° views of the Canigó to the west, the Corbières to the north, and the Albères mountain range to the east. The view is just as spectacular towards Spain and the Ampurda plain, with the half-moon of the Gulf of Rosas as the focal point. A very nice horseback ride along the border to the pic des salines and then the roc de Frausse is possible from Fontfrède. You will find all the hiking itineraries from Céret or the Fontfrède pass at the tourist office or in our "Hiking" file. It is also interesting to reach the pass by bicycle, it is a steep climb, but the landscapes are breathtaking!
