THE HIGH CITY
The upper town of Elne boasts pretty steep streets, charming squares and a succession of old houses.
In 1155, the inhabitants were granted permission to fortify their town. But, the remains of the upper town that you see today date mainly back to the 14th century. A marked path allows you to discover the whole upper town, fortified, massed around the cathedral. Pretty sloping streets, small charming place, and old houses follow one after another. Some galleries around the Porte-Balaguer street confirm the artistic vocation of the city. Elne also gave birth to a great painter, Etienne Terrus, of whom you can see the bust, made by his friend Maillol, on the square while leaving the cloister. Visit the museum which is dedicated to him.
