On the day of Sant Jordi (Saint George) the Catalans celebrate love and knowledge.

On Sant Jordi (St. George's Day), Catalans celebrate love and knowledge, with men giving their sweethearts a rose and women a book. It's a sort of Valentine's Day with a Catalan twist. Jordi, depicted slaying the dragon, is the symbol of the victory of good over evil. UNESCO has declared April 23 "World Book and Copyright Day", giving Sant Jordi its full meaning as the victory of knowledge over obscurantism, with the red rose symbolizing the blood of the slain dragon.
