Museum of natural history exposing very beautiful collections on the fauna and the flora, the oldest museum of Perpignan.
The original name of the Natural History Museum, created in 1770 by the university's Faculty of Medicine, was the "Cabinet des Curiosités". In 1900, the Museum moved into a vast 17th-century mansion with a wide, monumental staircase crowned by a superbly molded ceiling - the city's oldest museum. You'll stroll through 350 m² of permanent exhibits, including fine collections of the flora and fauna of southern France, species that have disappeared or become rare in the region, fish from Oceania, as well as a number of handicrafts from overseas and Africa. In the showcases, you can see the great predators of our planet, such as the Bengal tiger and the crocodile, as well as the Canigó isard. One room is devoted to local mineralogy, with remarkable stones and minerals. Don't miss the Egyptian room, featuring the sarcophagus of a 21st Dynasty priest and the mummy of Youf En Khonsou. This exceptional piece was donated by the Viceroy of Egypt in 1847, during his stay at the Vernet-les-Bains thermal baths. The city of Perpignan, owner of the Museum of Natural History, offers the public an extremely well-documented study library, a multi-purpose area for temporary events (conferences, exhibitions, etc.) and school groups. A visit for the whole family!
