CASALS AREA
The media library, in addition to its core activity, offers, on a yearly basis, an exhibition of archaeology and landscape paintings of the Catalan artist Martin Vives. It also houses the museum dedicated to one of the greatest musicians of the 20th century, the Catalan violoncellist Pablo Casals who came to settle in Conflent to escape from the Franco regime in 1939. You will see some of his personal belongings there, his pipes, his first piano, his famous umbrellas, a cello on which he gave concerts or some of his dresses of stage. Photos and letters evoke the artistic journey of this exceptional musician, incomparable teacher who was also a great humanist, fighting until the end for freedom and peace. You can consult the correspondence and view the archives films on Pablo Casals on site, especially the one concerning the creation of the festival in Prades in 1950 and listen to recordings of the Master from 1925 to 1960. Finally, you should know that his native town, El Vendrell, between Barcelona and Tarragona also dedicated a small museum which is just as interesting to him.
