PRATS-DE-MOLLO-LA-PRESTE NATURE RESERVE
Natural reserve known for its geological diversity and its richness in minerals in Prats-de-Mollo-la-Preste.
Above La Preste, at the foot of the Costabonne, in the westernmost part of the commune, the Nature Reserve offers over 2,300 hectares of wild and preserved mountains in an area stretching from the sources of the Tech to Pla Guillem. This fragile site, and consequently protected, occupies a circus of grandiose mountains on the southern slopes of the Canigó massif. Original by its vegetal diversity, all the mountain stages follow one another from 1,000 to 2,500 metres, it is original by the presence of an exceptional fauna, composed of isards, wild boars, some wild cats, Pyrenean desmans, griffon vultures, capercaillie, ptarmigan, bearded vultures, but also species of butterflies as beautiful as they are rare. In all, 125 species of vertebrates including 5 species of amphibians, 10 of reptiles, 80 birds and 30 mammals have been observed. In addition, you may have the chance and pleasure of witnessing the majestic flight of a Golden Eagle Panorama over the Esquerdes de Rotja. The site is also known for its geological diversity and mineral wealth. To reach its highest point, the peak of Costabonne, count 3 hours of ascent from the chalet of Conques or 4 hours from la Preste. 360° panorama from the summit! As in all the nature reserves, dogs, even on a leash, are not allowed, and a civic behaviour is requested, in order not to disturb the fauna or to damage the vegetation.
