THE CHAPEL OF JUHÈGUES
Site located in Torreilles, consisting of a Romanesque chapel dedicated to the Virgin whose Christian origins date back to the century.
Located at the edge of the village in the direction of Saint-Laurent-de-la-Salanque and surrounded by a magnificent park with multiple species, this thousand-year-old site is a jewel of Catalan art. Composed of a chapel dedicated to the Virgin, a hermitage, an enclosure and annex buildings, it extends over several hectares. The Romanesque chapel, whose Christian origins date back to the 11th century, would have been the site of a Jewish colony in the 9th century, hence the name Juhègues, from the Catalan word juheu: Jew in French. Entirely renovated, it is now presented in its best light since it has been cleared over the years of the age-old masonry that masked the beauty of its architecture, leaving visible old stones, columns and capitals as witnesses of its past. Today it houses numerous statues of saints, great mystics and even Our Lady of Lourdes, as well as a reproduction of Saint Bernadette in ecstasy at the apparition in the grotto. For all those who wish to know more about the history of this chapel and its religious and secular particularities, guided tours are organised in high season. During the year, the site hosts some religious celebrations and many events, including a classical music festival, a jazz festival and concerts. The area around the chapel is ideal for a family picnic or a romantic stroll. And the beach is only a few minutes away by car...
