THE CÉSAR TOWER

Tower dating from the Middle Ages, a massive 4-story building built of local stone, gneiss, schist and slate in Allassac.
Julius Caesar had nothing to do with the construction of this tower, which dates back to the Middle Ages. Admittedly, the foundations suggest that it was built on the foundations of an older tower from Roman or Merovingian times, but the name refers to "suzerain", here the successive bishops of Limoges. Rare witness of military art in Limousin, the round tower with square base is the only remaining element of the first fort of Allassac. It belongs to the medieval defence system of the 12th and 13th centuries which controlled the Treignac gate. This massive 4-storey building, 30 m high and 10 m in diameter, is built of local stone, gneiss, schist and slate. Take advantage of the guided tour at the tourist office to climb the steps of History and admire the magnificent panorama opening onto the Vézère valley, the Bassin de Brive, the vineyards and the slate sites.
