PENITENT CHAPEL
This pretty chapel has a five-bay bell tower wall and a very pure Romanesque chevet
Impossible to miss! The pretty Pénitents chapel, also known as Notre-Dame-du-Port-Haut, stands on the banks of the Dordogne. With its pure Romanesque chevet, it was built between the 12th and 15th centuries, at the entrance to an old bridge and near the high port where the gabares used to stop. Originally the parish church of Beaulieu, it was sold as a national asset. Purchased by a priest in 1803, it became the headquarters of the Pénitents Bleus brotherhood. Abandoned at the end of the 19th century, it was restored and now hosts exhibitions.
