VAL CASTLE
Feudal castle, one of the most beautiful specimens of the military architecture of the Hundred Years War, with 6 towers with machicolation
A feudal fortress built from the middle of the 15th century by the d'Estaing family, the Château de Val, although situated in the commune of Lanobre in the Cantal, has been the property of the town of Bort since 1953. It is one of the most beautiful specimens of the military architecture of the Hundred Years War that the Auvergne has preserved. The impounding of the dam is at the origin of the unusual character of the site. Saved from the waters by the rock on which it was built, the castle seems to be advancing on the lake, at the point of an arm of land. Its six towers crowned with machicolations with "pepperpot" roofs reflect in the water like a mirage, their different roofs give an original shimmer of colours. Its covered way, with its impressive frame, offers a beautiful panorama of the lake. Its Gothic chapel, dedicated to Saint-Blaise, has a beautiful vault. The castle hosts national painting exhibitions in spring and summer. Animations are organized in the main courtyard of the castle.
