SAINT LIBERAL CHAPEL
Chapel of the XIVth for the Dominicans, used to dispense the religious worship of the secular high schools of Brive, place of exhibitions
Saint Libéral is a native saint: the son of a baker named Delcour, Libéral was born in Brive around 870. In his youth, he is said to have performed his first miracle by distributing to the poor, during a famine, a full kneading trough of dough ready to be put in the oven. The inhabitants decided to build a chapel for him. Built in the 14th century for the Dominicans, this chapel was for a long time used to provide religious worship for the lay high schools of Brive and since 1976 it has hosted temporary exhibitions. At the beginning of November, during the Book Fair, great writers come here to lead debates and read texts that the solemnity of the place magnifies with emotion under the diffuse clarity of the stained glass windows of the master glassmaker Gesta, from Toulouse. Don't look for the bells, they were lowered during the Revolution when the chapel was bought as a national asset by the Lalande family, who set up a tallow foundry and a candle factory
