PENITENT CHAPEL
Chapel among the emblematic places of Collonges-la-Rouge where the brotherhood had taken on the voluntary task of burying the dead
Dating from the 15th century, it is the former seat of the Brotherhood of Black Penitents. The brotherhoods of Black Penitents would have been founded in the 12th-13th centuries to accompany the salvation of souls: moral and material aid to prisoners, assistance to those condemned to death, to "fools" and to the sick. This chapel of the Penitents is one of the emblematic places of Collonges-la-Rouge where the brotherhood had taken the voluntary responsibility of burying the dead. A small building with very sober decoration, it houses beautiful capitals and a painting representing Saint Bruno, dating from the 18th century.
