GIMEL CASCADES
One of the most beautiful natural sites in Gimel-les-Cascades, a picturesque, unusual and poetic site.
One of the most beautiful natural sites in the area, which gave its name to the town. Walk down the main street to the stone bridge, to reach the waterfalls and admire the view of one of them from the bridge. Following a wild gorge, the Gimelle river flows down to a ravine where it cascades down three successive waterfalls: the Grand Saut (45 m), the Redolle (38 m) and the Queue de cheval (60 m). This last fall falls into the Inferno chasm. Abel Hugo, Victor's brother, was the first author to evoke the beauty of these waterfalls in his book "La France pittoresque" published in 1883. A path through the private park of Vuillier allows you to reach this picturesque, unusual and poetic site. At the crossroads of the first two waterfalls, there is a house that was once a hotel-restaurant. A somewhat sporty descent of 143 m of difference in height takes a path which, according to legend, was built with 800 steps by a local magician. The tour takes about an hour and requires good shoes.
