ABBEY CHURCH OF SAINT-ANDRÉ AND SAINT-LÉGER
Church housing a reliquary bust of Saint Leger, a copy of the Black Madonna, a Virgin and Child and a baroque organ
The Romanesque church of Saint-Léger, a martyred bishop, was built from the 11th to the 13th century. Its dimensions and its old conventual buildings recall its monastic origins. The monks who observed the rule of Saint Benedict left the place during the Revolution. Its porch, in the Limousin Romanesque style, is distinguished by a short square bell tower and a central polylobed portal with four slightly broken arches. The sculpted granite capitals are worthy of attention, their historical decoration will interest young and old alike: fantastic characters or "vomited" by monstrous mugs. Inside: the reliquary bust of Saint Léger, a copy of the Black Madonna, a Madonna and Child and an original baroque organ made of chestnut wood in Verona, Italy, by the archers of the French organ builder Bartélémy Pomentelli. On October1st, the Meymacois traditionally celebrate in the Grand'Rue the holy martyr who would have the power to heal and preserve from madness.
