REGIONAL NATURAL PARK OF MILLEVACHES IN LIMOUSIN
Park sheltering remarkable specimens of fauna and flora in the heart of Limousin, a privileged refuge for the otter.
Located in the heart of Limousin, the Plateau de Millevaches Natural Park extends over the departments of Creuse, Haute-Vienne and Corrèze. A land of heathland and peat bogs, articulated around Mount Bessou, the highest point in Limousin (976 metres), the site is home to remarkable specimens of fauna and flora. The round-leaved sundew (droséra), reputed carnivore, rubs shoulders with cotton grass and gentian, from the roots of which a bitter-tasting aperitif, a speciality of Corrèze, is made. Solidly planted on its ancient crystalline base, the park is full of alveoli and ponds which make it a privileged refuge for dragonflies and otters, the symbol of this territory. Circaetes (white kite), waders, traps, liners, rare butterflies and lizards live in peace in this protected ecosystem from which most of the department's rivers and streams emerge, thus deserving its local name of "Pays des Mille sources" (Land of a Thousand Springs).
