THE VILLAGE

Saint-Rémy is located 15 kilometres north of Ussel on the road to La Courtine. Saint-Rémy is divided between the Mirambel forest and the Iolet woods. You will have understood it, we are well in the middle of the region of the correzian boletus, beware of the tires of the vehicles parked too close to a "deposit". As in all these small villages, there is a church, a wash-house, a large oak tree, a town hall, a multi-purpose hall and sometimes a school. Here, the school is a little peculiar, not that it is taught something different than in all schools, but that it does not bear the name of a philosopher, a writer, a politician... It bears the name of a well-known person in the region: Elie Cantin. Mr Cantin was the first to inaugurate this new school in 1937. Severe but fair, as were the teachers of that time, he taught the children politeness, respect, discipline and accuracy. On the morning of 15 July 1944 he was arrested by the Gestapo. Tortured for 26 hours, without giving any information to his executioners, he was in a macabre scene, shot in the back with a machine-gun burst.
