Listed as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, the church of Sainte Quitterie is located high above the town. According to legend, the martyrdom of Saint Quitterie, a Visigoth princess who refused to renounce the Christian faith, took place in Aire around 477. She was the source of a deep-rooted cult and of the passage through the town of pilgrims on their way to Santiago de Compostela. It is said that she was beheaded by her spurned fiancé, the beautiful woman having vowed her virginity to God. She is said to have carried her head to the hill of Le Mas, where the church now stands.
