THE CHAPEL OF OUR LADY OF PEACE AND ITS TWISTED BELL TOWER
Religious building built at the beginning of the XVIIth century in order to ease the tensions between Protestants and Catholics
In the middle of the old houses of the historic city stands the famous twisted bell tower of the Chapel of Our Lady of Peace. The religious building is said to have been built at the beginning of the 17th century in order to ease tensions between Protestants and Catholics, as there was no place of prayer for the latter within the walled city. The building was used as the town hall from 1808 to 1987, and was subsequently renovated. Its twisted bell tower is an architectural curiosity and one of the most complex of all the composite bell towers in France.
