ABBEY CHURCH OF SAINT-PIERRE-SAINT-PAUL
Abbey in Evaux-les-Bains, preserving the relics of Saint Marien in a 17th century gilded wooden shrine
Testimony to the Limousin Romanesque architecture, the abbey church of Saint-Pierre-Saint-Paul d'Evaux-les-Bains was built in the 11th century and rebuilt several times between the 15th and 18th centuries. The town had become a place of pilgrimage since it housed the tomb of Saint Marien, a 6th century hermit. The church, which has been damaged several times over the years, still has a porch belfry with a shape unique in Limousin. It is the oldest part of the building. With four levels, it alternates the plans: square for the first two levels, circular for the third and octagonal for the top level. Inside the abbey church, the relics of Saint Marien are kept in a 17th century gilded wooden shrine.
