THRAUD WOOD SCRUBLAND
This maquis, located in the commune of Maisonnisses, was the scene of an episode that left its mark on the history of local resistance.
In the town of Maisonnisses, the wood of Thouraud was in 1943 the scene of a striking episode in the history of local resistance. The first maquis of the department was formed in early summer 1943, on the initiative of some réfractaires to the STO and other young creusois. One morning in September 1943, the camp was surrounded by the occupier. The résistants of the maquis couldn't cope with a hundred Germans. Seven of them were killed while eight others were arrested, who were arrested. Only three returned from concentration camps. The place remained as it was, strangely, as if the resistance had left him a moment before. The stove and the crockery are still there, in the centre of the cabin. Since 1947, an impressive granite monument has been set, as a inas warning. To discover this moving place of memory, miraculously preserved, you just have to dig a little into the wood. Take about 500 metres from the parking lot on which the memorial stele is located.
