ST. STEPHEN'S CATHEDRAL
Cathédrale Saint-Étienne, with its 62 m bell tower-porch, is located in Limoges.
Situated in the heart of the old Cité district, this imposing granite cathedral is a masterpiece of Gothic style and is known as one of the most beautiful ogival cathedrals in the south of France. It was built on a site dedicated to worship since pagan times. Subsequently, three churches were built in succession: a first religious edifice in the 3rd century, a basilica dedicated to Saint-Etienne in the5th century, then a Romanesque cathedral in the 11th century, where Richard the Lionheart was confirmed Duke of Aquitaine in 1169.
Construction of the cathedral began in 1273. It was not completed until the end of the 19th century, when Viollet-le-Duc called for the bell tower to be joined to the nave. Its architecture is a mixture of styles, as evidenced by the richly decorated, flamboyant Gothic Saint-Jean portal and the richly ornate Renaissance rood screen. Although there are some magnificent stained-glass windows, the interior is relatively dark, creating a very special atmosphere.
As you visit the church, you'll learn more about the site from the many explanatory panels. Take advantage of the summer months to hear the magnificent organ at Sunday vespers. And don't forget to visit the Cathedral in the evening: the Saint-Jean portal is particularly beautiful when lit up at night. Just a stone's throw away, enjoy the magnificent Jardin de l'Évêché with its terraces overlooking the Vienne River and its botanical garden.
