THE GARDENS OF THE BISHOPRIC
This large green space, at the foot of Saint-Etienne Cathedral, offers a relaxing setting and a magnificent view of the Vienne River
The Jardins de l'évêché are a must-see in Limoges. At the foot of Saint-Étienne cathedral, the city's largest green space offers a relaxing setting and magnificent views. Built on terraces, it comprises a garden with parterres à la française and water basins, highly prized for their cool environment, and a botanical garden with 1,500 plant species.
Presented in families, the plants tell us all about their uses (medicinal, forage, aromatic and condiment plants, melliferous plants, etc.) and their natural native environments. Five biotopes have been created in the ecological area where the kiosk is located.
The gardens were originally linked to the bishop's palace (now the Musée des Beaux-Arts), and their architecture follows the rules of perspective and symmetry, in the spirit of 18th-century gardens. In those days, the steep slopes to the south were planted with vines and criss-crossed by several paths where huts were set up. These were replaced in the 18th century by retaining terraces.
The park has preserved a vestige of the Règle abbey, which stood here from the 9th to the 11th century: an underground passageway that can be visited with a guide from the tourist office.
Don't forget to visit the highest terraces, where you can enjoy a beautiful view of the Vienne River. There's also a pollinarium to prevent pollen allergies.
Les Jardins de l'évêché: alone or with friends, this is a haven of peace where you can relax and stroll.
