Former convents and church of Mortemart with 2 monumental staircases, one of which is accessible, with artists' studios
Mortemart is one of the most beautiful villages in France. In 1330, Cardinal Gauvain had three convents built. The Augustinian monastery housed a college (now the town hall). Its chapel, now the village church, features astonishing sculptures of contemporary characters and fantastical animals. The Carmelite convent welcomed and cared for pilgrims and the needy. Admire its portal, square towers and monumental staircases, the murals in the vaulted entrance passage, and its painted walls and ceilings. Artists' studios.
