On 10 June 1944, the village of Oradour-sur-Glane suffered the worst ordeal in its history. His 642 souls were massacred by a troop of about 200 SS. The men were separated from their families and summarily executed in several enclosed areas of the village. Women and children are locked in the church before being gassed, machine-gunned and burned. In just a few hours, the charming village is reduced to ruins and ashes. Two years later, on 10 May 1946, its remains were classified as a Historic Monument; the construction of the new town followed.
