Remarkable site, full of history and legends, having been the setting of a memorable battle in July 1944.
The highest point in the canton, Mount Gargan (731 metres) is a remarkable site steeped in history and legend. It is known to all Limousins for having been the setting for a memorable battle between Colonel Guingouin's troops and those of the Germans and the militia in July 1944. The summit is easily reached via a gently sloping path surrounded by century-old beech trees with curved and twisted branches. In the midst of the short grass and heather, one discovers the consolidated ruins of the Notre-Dame-de-Bon-Secours chapel, built by Abbot Joyeux in the 1870s (it was he who planted the beech trees), a devotional fountain and a stele in memory of the Maquis. Two orientation tables allow you to find your way around this sumptuous panorama opening onto the Limousin plateaux, from the Monédières to the Ambazac mountains and, on a clear day, even onto the puy de Sancy. The walk also makes us discover an ideal site for a picnic or for walks on the hiking trails offered in the surrounding area. Discovery booklet available on the site.
