LA TOURBIERE DES DAUGES
Peat bog managed by the Conservatoire d'espace naturelle de Nouvelle-Aquitaine in Saint-Léger-la-Montagne.
This almost circular, flat-bottomed depression began to deepen about 3 million years ago. 12,000 years ago, the combined effects of cold and permanent humidity prevented the decomposition of the vegetation, which was deposited more than 3 metres thick, forming peat. A national reserve since 1998, the site is managed by the Conservatoire d'espace naturelle de Nouvelle-Aquitaine. Over 200 hectares, the interpretation and discovery trails open to the general public allow visitors to discover a remarkable flora, including emblematic droseras (small carnivorous plants with hairy leaves), the summer spiranthus (whitish orchid) or the sheathed cotton woolly cottony cottony tussock. The bog is also rich in insects. There are more than 800 species, including many butterflies and remarkable dragonflies such as the Arctic cordulia. To discover all this wealth of photos, sounds, videos and games, you can borrow a free GPtO, a GPS interpretation device, from the Maison de la Réserve, which organizes exhibitions and themed outings. Boots necessary, even in summer!
