ECOMUSEUM OF THE MOULIN DU GOT
Ecomuseum where you can discover the stages of book making, the evolution of paper-making techniques and graphic arts
A rare site, a must-see! The community-owned Moulin du Got perpetuates the memory of 500 years of paper-making activity, presenting the public with every stage in the manufacture of a book: from paper to printing. Built in the early 16th century on the Tard river, a tributary of the Vienne, the mill produced paper until 1954, when it closed... and then recently reopened.
Following in the footsteps of their 15th-century predecessors, the mill's papermakers now hand-produce pure cotton, linen and hemp paper for the fine arts and graphic arts.
Discover the evolution of paper-making techniques. From hand-made sheets to the first continuous paper machine, from typographic composition with movable type to automatic presses, the Moulin du Got is more than a living museum: it's a real place for production demonstrations, educational activities, creative workshops and residencies for artists, who can come and create their works of art on the paper of their choice. In the store, you'll find original creations: lithographs, etchings, cards..
If the weather is fine, you can extend your visit with a snack (a picnic area has been set up right beside the mill, on the banks of the river) or a walk in the countryside: a lovely shady path runs alongside the Vienne, from the Moulin du Got to the little station in Brignac (1h round trip).
