A site that lets you experience Brassempouy's prehistory through animal reconstructions, historical hunting and tours.
Perched on the hillsides of Chalosse, Brassempouy is a village entirely dedicated to archaeology. The PréhistoSite is a space dedicated to life in prehistoric times, with a museum, an ArchéoParc, an archaeological site and an educational and scientific center. Come into contact with Cro-Magnon man, his tools and the animals that surrounded him in the Upper Paleolithic! The museum is dedicated to the history of the excavations carried out since the 19th century at the Grottes du Pape archaeological site. Here, prehistoric art takes pride of place, with bone engravings, ornaments and a large collection of female statuettes (casts), including the famous Lady with a Hood (cast), one of the oldest known representations of a human face in the world. The ArchéoParc features life-size animal reconstructions, including majestic megaceros deer, mammoths and cave hyenas. You can also learn about prehistoric hunting with a thruster (30-minute workshop), and discover flintknapping and fire-lighting techniques (daily). An original, hands-on way to experience prehistory! Looking for original activities to occupy your vacation? Young and old are invited to take part in workshops (booking required) to learn how to carve the Lady in the Hood, paint like our ancestors or make jewelry. Exhibitions, conferences, shows... To make sure you don't miss a thing, visit our website!
