This church, built between 1881 and 1883, sits in the heart of the village
Built between 1881 and 1883, the church of Saint-Martin replaced an old chapel which sooner or later would have collapsed! Over the centuries, the building has been badly damaged: faulty workmanship, fire, shelling... However, it still stands in the heart of the village! Almost 45 metres long and a little over 18 metres high, the spire rises to a height of 54 metres. We love its singular style, originating from the Spanish Renaissance. In 2012, it was listed as a Historic Monument. The 19th century portal evokes that of Fatima, made later in 1917. Inside: its nave is framed by two side aisles and its transept is decorated with two beautiful rosettes. The chapel of the Sepulchre dating from the 16th century is visible to the left of the entrance. As for the stained-glass windows: the one above the altar of Saint Martin contains a medallion in which the memorial of Rethondes (the armistice of 11 November 1918 having been signed on Saint Martin's Day) and the medallion of the stained-glass window above the altar of the Virgin represents the church of Bayon. In 2012, following a negative opinion from the security commission, the church had to be closed to the public because the stability of the bell tower was not assured, but the building has been welcoming the faithful again since May 2015.
