SAINT-MAXIMIN CHURCH
An opportunity to visit the church of Saint-Maximin, located in Jarny, with exceptional frescoes, and presenting works
The church of Saint-Maximin, with its monumental proportions, is one of the most interesting religious buildings in Jarny and its surroundings. In the past, it was known as a "small cathedral", since it was surrounded by a fortified wall. Erected in the 13th century, it is protected by a massive, square, free-standing bell tower. Over the centuries, it underwent many phases of reconstruction, burnt down twice in the 16th and 19th centuries. The south-east chapel, the sacristy and the western porch are from the 19th century. Inside, you can admire a 17th century oak Christ, restored by the abbot of Hédouville. Other works from the 16th (the altar, the baptismal font, the wooden Virgin...) and 19th centuries (the paintings and the organ) are worth a look. The church also houses a set of 17 stained glass windows, one of which depicts the fire in the bell tower. The ensemble was restored many times during the 20th century, notably thanks to the generosity of Madame de Moncel. In 1982, the church was included in the Supplementary Inventory of Historic Monuments. The church has exceptional frescoes since its renovation.
