LA PORTE DE FRANCE

The Porte de France, with its vaulted passageway and drawbridge, is part of Longwy's architectural heritage.
The fortified town of Longwy once had two opposing gates. To the north, the Burgundy gate looking towards Belgium and Luxembourg (destroyed in 1914); and to the south, the French gate, so called because it looked towards the interior of the Kingdom. It has a vaulted passage and a drawbridge. Built in white stone, of a radiant classicism, its arch and its embrasures are nicely designed, just like its joints, finely marked. Restored in 2001, the Porte de France remains a strong symbol of the town of Longwy.
