Full of history, it irons... or rather... retraces the history of the iron, from its origin to the present day. With no less than 4,000 pieces (from the collection of Jean-Pierre Zuccali), it houses one of the largest collections of irons in Europe. In the heart of the fortress designed by Vauban, the museum is located in the oven room of the former military bakery. During the visit, you will discover the evolution of the iron over the centuries: from its creation to its apogee, to the main innovations and latest uses. In France, it was Calor who created the first model in 1917. The museum houses a wide range of different types of irons: the glazing iron, the fireplace iron, the ember iron, the ingot iron and even... the wig iron! But also enough to know more about the main materials used (wrought iron, terracotta, iron, bronze, copper, brass, cast iron and aluminum...) and the first techniques used: smoothing, pressing, folding, piping, glazing and ballooning. In addition, the collection of irons is completed by a beautiful set of period furnaces. You will also have the opportunity to discover the various trades related to ironing and with the different heating methods. A visit during which real curiosities and rarities will be revealed to you. Guided tours are available on request.
