ST. JAMES CHURCH
Church in the baroque style with a remarkable interior with its magnificent carved woodwork and paintings by Girardet
This exceptional Baroque church was built on the initiative of the canons of Saint-Rémy Abbey between 1730 and 1747. Initially led by Jean-Nicolas Jenneson and Jean-Nicolas Jadot, the work was interrupted for lack of funds. Fortunately, Stanislas Leszczynski lent his financial support, and the church was completed by the king's personal architect, Emmanuel Héré. Héré designed two majestic 52-metre-high towers. The interior is equally remarkable, with its magnificent carved woodwork and paintings by Girardet. But the main attraction is the prestigious and enchanting organ. It was listed as a Monument Historique in 1986, while the church was classified in 1926. Designed by Héré and built by Nicolas Dupont, it does not reveal its pipes, making it a unique case for this instrument. A trompe-l'œil fresco depicting the "Entrance to Paradise" completes the rich decor. The organ was rebuilt in 2003, as it was suffering from the weight of the years. It is now cared for by the Association des amis de l'orgue et du patrimoine de l'église Saint-Jacques de Lunéville. Created in 1986, the association's aim is to maintain and promote the organ's heritage as a historic monument. To keep the instrument alive, the association regularly organizes events around the organ, including tours and concerts. Please note that the church is closed during the low season.
