STATUE OF THE GREGORIAN ABBOT
The current statue of the Emberménil priest replaces the one destroyed during the German occupation
Don't be fooled by his title of abbot! Gregory is a prominent figure of the French Revolution in Lorraine. This representative of the Third State, the son of a peasant from Lorraine, called very early on for universal suffrage, the total abolition of privileges, the abolition of slavery... We owe him the word "vandalism", in reference to the Barbarians who sacked Rome in 455. Built in 1955, the present statue of the parish priest of Emberménil replaces the one that was destroyed during the German occupation. It stands in the Piazza dei Carmes, close to the city centre. The abbot's house in Emberménil, a small village 20 km from Lunéville, retraces his entire life and work through a permanent museum.
