THE MERCHANT'S HOUSE
House built in Lunéville, located in the heart of the old town, clearly showing a desire to display his social success
This house built in pink sandstone is located in the heart of the old town and you won't be able to miss it! Imposing dimensions, colour, windows formed by disproportionate vaults... the house clearly shows a willingness to show off its social success. Dating from the 18th century, it is remarkable for its richly decorated and recently renovated façade. The Merchant's House owes its name to its very first owner whose trade is suggested by the corner sculptures. You will easily notice a frieze of bundles and barrels linked by a rope, a ship's bow, a minaret surmounted by the crescent of Islam and an Indian's head topped with ruffled feathers... All these clues suggest that the owner was a merchant of spices and exotic foodstuffs who was to supply the court of King Stanislas Leszczynski by importing them from overseas. The Merchant's House has been listed as a Historical Monument since 1976.
