The city of Lunéville has a bucolic setting in a magnificent castle nicknamed the Versailles of Lorraine and gardens

The etymological assumptions have never been unanimously the best choice concerning the name of Lunéville. Luna Villa could come from the Moon, whose the ville would have adopted the weapons. As on the hill of Léomont, a Gallo-Roman temple was dedicated to Diane, goddess of the night. Or the Celtic Llun, which designated a pleasant place. This could still be a termination of lunae, at the origin of Vezouze. The fact remains that Lunéville out of the shadows in the 10th century. Unmissable point of passage on the Route du Sel, the salt workers and merchants borrowed it between Rosières, Vic-sur-Seille, Einville, Marsal, Deneuvre then Alsace on one side, Burgundy on the other. The trade of salt was source of income for the city that levied a toll on the passage. A castle and an abbey were built from the year 1000. After having belonged to German princes then Etienne, bishop of Toul, the city became the property of the dynasty of Folmar, until 1055. The Dagsbourg, Aremberg, Hambourg succeeded him before the county of Lunéville is attached to the Lorraine in 1243. Lunéville began to develop only from 1330 under the reign of the duke Raoul Ier. The old castle survived until 1612, when Henri II demolishes it to rebuild another one. Damaged during the Thirty Years war, the new castle was restored by Léopold in 1698 before building the current castle. Headquarters of the court, Lunéville therefore remained, until 1766, the unofficial capital of Lorraine, which welcomed particularly Voltaire. Chief town of district, Lunéville is well located between Nancy and the Vosges, with its remarkable heritage that has earned the designation of "Versailles lorrain". Lunéville, it is also the city of macaroons. The macaroon comes from the macarone Venetian, which means fine pasta. It was introduced in Lunéville when the duke of Lorraine, Charles III, married Claude de France. This perfect and secret blend of egg white, sugar and almonds is produced as perfectly in Boulay as in Nancy. Nicknamed "la cité cavalière" even today, Lunéville had to ten companies of Gendarmes rouges. In 1939, there is always in Lunéville two regiments of dragons, nearly 2,000 horses. Currently, the 53rd Régiment de Transmission still contains more than 1,000 soldiers. With nearly 20,000 inhabitants today, Lunéville has so many assets to put forward on the cultural, heritage and tourist level. It is also a dynamic city on the associative level. Drowned in a green setting, between Nancy and the Vosges, Lunéville offers its residents the benefits of a city in the countryside, respectful of the environment and concerned about quality of life. Its many charms can only seduce.
