ST. GENGOULT'S CHURCH
Visit a place of worship, located in the city center, to admire its nave, its bell tower, and observe the wooden evangelists
Located in the city centre, the church is not lacking in charm and history. The discovery of a crypt in 1982 suggests that the church was built at the end of the 11th century. Three styles blend harmoniously: Romanesque, Gothic and classical. It consists of a three-aisled nave with four bays, a transept, a cul-de-four apse and a bell tower. The church is placed under the patronage of Saint Gengoult, patron saint of tanners and martyr of the marital faith. The drama is depicted in the stained glass window to the right of the choir. Among the furniture classified as a historical monument, let us mention the calvary attributed to Ligier Richier in wood, comprising six life-size figures, the Christ with polychrome stone ties, the Virgin of Pity, the Dictation of the Three Dead and the Three Lives, the only representation in Lorraine of this theme of equality in the face of death. Also to be discovered, the four wooden evangelists, the arms of Lorraine, Bar, Briey and the abbots of Saint-Pierremont Abbey. A fascinating visit to this historic place of worship.
