AMERICAN CEMETERY AND MEMORIAL OF SAINT-MIHIEL
American cemetery with chapel and museum, in the center of the Saillant de Saint-Mihiel, featuring a lamp representing the eternal flame
Covering 16 hectares, the American cemetery is located almost in the center of the Saint-Mihiel Salient. 4,153 soldiers are buried here. It is the third largest of the eight American military cemeteries of the First World War in Europe. At the center of the peristyle memorial, which contains the names of 284 soldiers never found, a lamp represents the eternal flame. The imposing granite urn evokes an ancient funerary vessel. The altar in the chapel is carved from white Italian marble. A richly colored mosaic mural depicts the "Angel of Victory" returning the sword to its scabbard after battle, and the "Doves of Peace" recall the colors of the United States and France. In the museum, which is entered through two huge bronze doors decorated with stars and soldiers' heads, a mural map of the Saint-Mihiel region is made up of different-colored marbles. Every year in May, the traditional Memorial Day ceremony is an opportunity to pay tribute to all the soldiers who have died in all wars.
