ST. STEPHEN'S CATHEDRAL
Cathédrale Saint-Étienne de Toul, organizing exhibitions, tours and concerts as well as literary and gastronomic fairs
From the freeway, you can see the majestic 65 m-high towers of Saint-Étienne Cathedral in the distance. It is undoubtedly this edifice that is Toul's pride and joy, earning it the nickname "Gothic Toul". Built between 1221 and 1500, it took over three centuries to complete. Its impressive beauty and incredible dimensions are awe-inspiring. This 801-year-old grande dame of Toul harmoniously blends different architectural styles - Ottoman, Romanesque and Gothic - that are as majestic as they are flamboyant. Romanesque in plan and Gothic in construction, the edifice symbolizes the episcopal wealth of Toul and the entire region. The curved Christ and Mary Magdalene at its feet are of Toul design. The central clocheton houses a 16th-century bell. A Louis XV organ loft overlooks the main portal. The windows are adorned with lancets and a six-lobed rose. There are also two Renaissance-style chapels and one of the largest Gothic cloisters.
In addition to guided tours, regular events are organized in and around the cathedral throughout the year. These include exhibitions, the Bach Festival between May and October with numerous concerts, literary and gastronomic fairs. Don't forget to take part in Quasimodo's "casse-croûte", an unusual lunch between the two towers of St. Stephen's Cathedral, with a 360-degree view over the Moselle. Breathtaking! See the calendar of events on the town's website.
