ANCIENT CASTLE OF VAUDÉMONT
Remains of an old castle, full of history, with a remarkable tower classified as a historical monument and gardens.
Not much remains of the old castle of Vaudémont, and yet its history is rich! No one really knows why its keep is nicknamed the Brunehaut Tower, but one thing is certain: it is the most visible part of the remains. Currently, it is about 15 m long, but before that it was 24 m long and 16.50 m wide, with a wall thickness of 4.50 m! There can be no doubt about the solidity and impregnability of the fortress. But other precautions had been taken, such as a ditch measuring 12 m by 7 m, dug to create a separation from the village. With the enlargement of the village, two more moats were built in the 14th century. Vaudémont came under siege during the Ten Years' War against René d'Anjou but was never taken. However, the castle was finally dismantled in 1639 by order of Richelieu. The Brunehaut tower was restored in 1930 and is listed as a historical monument. As for the gardens of the castle, they are now occupied by vegetable gardens. A visit to this heritage is a must.
