SITE ARCHÉOLOGIQUE DES GROTTES DU PAPE
Archaeological site located in Gaujacq to discover prehistoric remains, the famous Dame à la Capuche and much more.
It was here that some of the prehistoric remains on display in the museum were discovered, as well as the famous Dame à la Capuche (housed in the Musée d'Archéologie Nationale) and a collection of mammoth ivory statuettes. Discover the history of a site occupied for over 30,000 years and excavated for almost 150 years! There are two ways to visit the Caves du Pape archaeological site, either on foot along a hiking trail or by car. The quick-access tour is available from February to November, and includes access to the immediate vicinity of the caves for the guided tour. The cave trail tour is available from April to September, accompanied by a mediator. You'll set off on a hike through the heart of Chalosse to the archaeological site via the Grottes trail. During this walk in a natural environment, between forests and meadows, you'll go back in time and discover the evolution of the landscape, flora and fauna up to the time of occupation of the Brassempouy caves. On arrival at the caves, enjoy an outdoor tour of this exceptional site, before heading back to the village. Please note that the visit via the path requires good physical condition. It is not accessible to people with reduced mobility. Visits to the Grottes du Pape archaeological site must be booked in advance with PréhistoSite de Brassempouy.
