THE MONUMENT TO MICHAUX
The monument to Michaux, the first pedal cycle in Bar-le-Duc.
Pierre and his son Ernest, both Barisiens by birth, are the inventors of the Michaudine, better known as the first pedal cycle. This concave and sculpted 18th century façade once contained a fountain. It now bears a statue of a chubby child, proudly leaning on his bicycle, the work of Édouard Houssin (it is a copy, the original has disappeared). The invention ensured the success of the family business for a while before it collapsed. The monument was erected in 1894, commissioned by the City of Bar-le-Duc.
