COLLÈGE GILLES DE TRÈVES
The building reopens its doors to visitors curious to discover its majestic inner courtyard lined with galleries
An extraordinary Renaissance monument in 16th-century Lorraine style. It was described by Montaigne, who visited Bar-le-Duc in 1580, as "the most beautiful town house in France". Built by Gilles de Trèves, dean of the collegiate church of Saint-Maxe, it was completed in 1574 and opened to young Barrois students in 1582. The building remained a college until its closure in 2002. Extensively renovated, the building now hosts events such as the "Bar En'Voix" international a cappella singing festival on the first weekend in June.
