COLD-EARTH WORKS
Froideterre's poignant account of the Great War, set in Bras-sur-Meuse.
Leaving Douaumont in the direction of Verdun, the Froideterre ouvrage is reached by a narrow road. Built in 1888, this infantry post was enlarged in 1904, adding shelters, a barracks, 2 observation posts, a Bourges casemate and a rotating turret equipped with 2 cannons. During the Great War, it housed 200 soldiers. In June 1916, the German army bombarded the site before going on the offensive: clashes ensued, but the fortification halted the enemy advance.
